“5년 걸으니 부처가 밥 되고 밥이 똥 되네”

[중앙일보 백성호] “5년간 걸었더니 부처가 밥이 되고, 밥이 똥이 되고, 똥이 부처가 되더군요.”

도법(59·인드라망생명공동체 상임대표) 스님이 ‘5년 탁발 대장정’을 마친다. 2004년 3월1일 지리산 노고단에서 출발한 ‘생명평화탁발순례’가 14일 끝맺음을 하는 것이다. 출발점도 지리산 노고단, 종착점도 지리산 노고단이다. 도법 스님과 순례단은 5년간 국토의 구석구석을 밟으며 총 1만2000여㎞(3만여 리)를 걸었다. 길 위에서 인연이 닿은 사람만 8만 명이 넘는다고 한다. 그야말로 ‘진리 찾아 3만리’다.

9일 밤 서울 인사동에서 만난 도법 스님은 “다녀보니까 모두 ‘못 살겠다’고 아우성이다. 다들 ‘경제타령’을 한다. 그러나 거기에는 해답이 없다”고 운을 뗐다. “지난 30년을 돌아보라. 우리는 ‘경제타령’만 하며 살았다. 그런데도 ‘타령’은 줄지 않는다. 세상이 빨라질수록 ‘타령’은 더 늘어난다. 왜 그런가. 해답이 나오지 않기 때문이다. 이젠 삶의 방식이 바뀌어야 한다.”

도법 스님은 최근의 경제난을 예로 들었다. 지금은 미국이 기침하면 한국은 몸살을 앓는다는 거다. “한국이 몸살을 하면 현장에선 죽겠다고 아우성이다. 그런데 그 속에서도 흔들리지 않고 사는 이들이 있다. 그들의 공통적인 삶의 방식은 ‘소박함’과 ‘아담함’이더라. 5년간 걸으며 그게 대안적 삶의 방식이 될 수 있음을 보았다.”

탁발 순례단이 길을 갈 때는 원칙이 있다. 한 줄로 서서 침묵하며 걷는 거다. ‘한 줄’에는 지나는 자동차 등 ‘상대에 대한 배려’가, ‘침묵’에는 화두를 들거나, 기도를 하는 등 자기 방식의 ‘내려놓음’이 담겨 있다. “사람들은 더 큰 차, 더 큰 집을 가지면 삶이 편안하고 여유로울 거라고 생각한다. 그래서 그걸 위해 현재의 편암함과 여유로움을 희생하며 산다. 그런데 큰 차와 큰 집을 가지면 편안한가. 그렇지가 않다. 그런데도 우리는 끊임없이 내일을 위해 오늘을 희생하며 살아간다.” 결국 ‘내일’까지도 희생하고 만다는 지적이다.

도법 스님은 개인적으로 ‘5년 탁발 순례’가 ‘10년 선방 참선’보다 유익했다고 한다. “앉는 것과 걷는 것, 방식은 상관없다. 필요하면 산중에서도 하고, 필요하면 시중에서도 하는 거다. 확실한 건 걷다 보니 내가 단순하고, 소박해지더라는 거다.”

이어서 도법 스님은 ‘깨달음의 환상’을 꼬집었다. “처음에는 내게도 거품과 환상이 있었다. 깨달음에 대한, 부처에 대한, 수행하기 좋은 도량에 대한 환상과 거품이 있었다. 그런데 걷다 보니 그게 걷히더라. 또 걷힌 만큼 내가 홀가분하고, 편해지더라.”

도법 스님은 똥과 밥, 그리고 부처를 말했다. 사람들은 흔히 ‘부처는 거룩한 것, 밥은 하찮은 것, 똥은 더러운 것’이라고 여긴다. 스님은 “그렇지 않다”고 했다. “똥이 없는 밥, 존재할 수 없다. 밥 없이 부처도 존재할 수 없다. 부처가 없는 똥, 그것도 존재할 수 없다. 그러니 부처도 거룩하고, 밥도 거룩하고, 똥도 거룩한 것이다. 세상의 어느 것도 거룩하지 않은 것이 없다. 그래서 이젠 부처를 봐도 편안하고, 밥을 봐도, 똥을 봐도 편안하더라.”

5년 순례를 통해 스님은 그걸 봤다고 했다. 세상의 모두가 그렇게 ‘그물망의 그물코’처럼 엮여있다고 했다. “그게 ‘동체대비(同體大悲·중생의 고통을 자신의 고통으로 여기는 부처의 자비)’더라. 그게 ‘대자대비(大慈大悲)’더라. 길에서 만났던 사람들에게 그걸 불교식 언어가 아닌 평범한 언어로 말했다.”

도법 스님은 이번 탁발 순례를 『화엄경』에 빗댔다. 『화엄경』은 선재동자가 선지식을 찾아 길을 떠나는 구도의 여행기다. “『화엄경』을 보면 수행승 뿐 아니라 천한 직업인 기생도 나오고, 뱃사공도 나온다. 그리고 나중에는 그들이 모두 ‘선지식’임을 깨닫게 된다.” 그 말 끝에 도법 스님은 물음을 던졌다. “왜 그런가?” 침묵 끝에 스님은 말을 이었다. “밖으로 드러난 모양과 명칭과 관계가 없다는 거다. 내용을 보라는 거다. 그럼 그게 하나임을 알게 된다. 석가모니 부처님의 유언 중에 ‘말에 의지하지 말고 내용에 의지하라’는 말이 있다. 그 얘기다. 나도 이번 순례에서 목사님도 만나고, 신부님도 만나고, 숱한 사람들을 만났다. 그들이 내겐 모두 ‘선지식’이다.” 도법 스님은 다만 아직 그런 시선이 완전히 자신의 체질로 화하진 않았다고 덧붙였다.

도법 스님은 탁발 순례를 마치면 지리산 실상사로 내려갈 작정이다. 그곳에서 산골마을 사람들과 함께 ‘단순하고 소박한 대안적 삶의 방식’을 시도해 볼 계획이다.
